Emma’s sketches for the mural.

There is something so magical about seeing how artists work and what their thought process is during creation.

The art: Richard Serra, Gutter Corner Splash: Night Shift, 1969/1995
The challenge: It’s lead. “For lead in general, it’s plastic and blankets. You want to touch it as little as possible. The piece is so big, we left it in place and built a wall entombing it so it doesn’t get damaged in construction.”

Great article about the SFMOMA move.  I kind of love the idea that Splash is going to be silently trapped in the museum for 3 years all alone.

The Conundrum of Finding Artists

It seems silly to be straining to find artists for the next show I’ll be curating independently.  I’m so use to being part of an established gallery with a conventional amount of space and a large list of potential artists.  With such a large stable, we always have a bank of great, talented artists to pull from.

But now I find myself still months away from first show in the space, looking forward to the next one and thinking to myself, “Who the hell am I going to show?”  The August/September show is one I’ve been working on in my head for years, so there is a reasonable amount of groundwork that has already been taken care of.  Now the challenge is to find something that I’m just as excited about, that is just as fitting for this large and challenging space.

I’m hesitant to put out a cattle call, because that inherently comes with a plethora of work that I’m not going to be interested in showing.  Although I’m sure there would be plenty of work that would be good, the idea of wading through an already inundated inbox does not sound like fun.  Despite that, I think asking the tumblr-sphere for suggestions might be interesting.

Love how much attention Hung had been getting lately. She’s an incredible artist and an even more incredible person. I feel terribly lucky to get to spend time with her occasionally.

Self-Portrait as a Self-Destructing Chocolate Head

Many of us attending the opening of the New Museum’s “NYC 1993” saw visions of our former selves back in the day, but no one had more selves there than Janine Antoni.

On the second floor, on a row of high plinths, are 14 Antoni heads. These are her famous self-portraits, Lick and Lather, casts made in chocolate and soap that were modeled on classical busts and “re-sculpted” by the processes described in the title.

Standing nearby, Antoni enjoyed watching visitors walk up close to the heads, and smell them.

“There’s not a lot of time between smelling and biting,” concedes the artist, whose heads have been attacked that way on several occasions. “It’s a funny thing when you make pieces about desire and people succumb to their desire.”

Antoni is happy to make replacement heads, which she does using FDA-approved latex molds: “Then I have to re-lick it, which is a bummer.”
